How to Unclog a Kitchen Sink

A clogged kitchen sink can be a major inconvenience, since the sink is the center of your kitchen. You use your kitchen sink to both cook and clean so a clog can halt kitchen activity entirely. Some kitchen sink clogs can be cleared on your own, but some are more serious and require the help of a professional. Here are a few things that you can try to unclog your sink before involving a professional.

Use a Plunger

Plungers are useful for much more than just unclogging toilets. If you have a clogged kitchen sink, using a plunger can have the same effect as that with a clogged toilet. Before trying a plunger, you should purchase a new one that has never been used in your bathroom before. When buying the new plunger, make sure the plunger head will cover the drain entirely. This is important!

First, you need to fill your kitchen sink with hot water. If you have a double-sided sink, fill both sides. Plunge each drain 6-10 times vigorously. Repeat this step several times to unclog the sink. If the clog remains, you may want to call a professional.

Use Vinegar and Baking Soda

Instead of using costly chemical drain cleaners, you can cause a chemical reaction within your drain with vinegar and baking soda. This is a cheap alternative that often can clear out kitchen sink clogs. Make sure you have a drain stopper before attempting this method.

First, push one cup of baking soda down the drain. Use a rubber spatula to do so it ensure that the baking soda is pushed down far enough to have an affect on the clog. Pour one cup of white vinegar in the drain and put the stopper in. Doing so will keep the chemical reaction in the drain. Wait 5 minutes before taking the stopper out. Run warm water down the drain to see if the clog has subsided. If not, you may want to call a professional or attempt one of the other suggested methods.

Remove the Trap

Removing the drain tap is something that should be done as a last resort. This is not an easy task and should usually be handled by a professional. If you want to give it a try, make sure you turn off your water before doing so. Removing the trap will help you determine where the clog is within in the pipes, which can help you make a establish whether or not you need to call an experienced plumber or drain cleaning service. In the best case scenario, removing the trap will give you easy access to remove the clog, if the clog is in the trap itself. If not, the clog might be further down the pipe and you would need to involve someone with more experience.
